Abstract

In an increasingly dynamic online gaming landscape, full-stack engineering has evolved from a mere option to a necessity. Modern game servers must have low latency (<20ms), be able to handle thousands of players, counter sophisticated player cheating, and grow in size as users proliferate due to viral games, among other attributes. This paper summarizes the key engineering concepts required to develop and expand a large-scale online gaming solution, such as: architectural design, real-time multiplayer enabling, horizontal scalability patterns, security deals, and data engineering for player analytics. This paper offers valuable insights for game designers, analyzing current technologies and architectural decisions and showing how they can be utilized to craft scalable, efficient and secure game backends that can adapt to their users, while maintaining resilience.
